Post Researching Carriers, Forwarders, & Brokers
If you need to ship large items the only way to go is to ship them via freight common carrier. Items may be shipped via motor freight (truck), air freight (plane) or ocean freight (boat). Finding a company to do the shipping has become increasing easy with many shipping companies and brokers being available via the Internet. A simple Google search of "Shipping Freight" leads you to many options. You can contact the carrier directly or work with a freight forwarder/broker. However, it is always important to research the company you are doing business with. These companies are monitored and must be licensed with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA).

A good tip that we always recommend is to search the FMCSA database for the company you are planning to use. To find the search page, visit: http://li-public.fmcsa.dot.gov/, click the "Continue" link, then select the option "Carrier Search" from the drop down menu on the upper right hand side of the web page.. A quick search will reveal the USDOT number, business address, their authorities, insurance requirements, and other information. Pay attention to the "Authority" section as the company you are using must have an "Active" status for "Common", "Contract", or "Broker" authorities.

Hopefully this little tip will assist you in your search for booking a legitimate freight carrier or using a legitimate broker.

What I need is another research tool to look up the history of these companies. I was going to book a job with a forwarder I found on the Internet but did some Google searches first. Turns out they were sued by one of the trucking companies! It was Roadway or Yellow or some other trucking company. And guess what? The forwarders' website is not on the Internet anymore. You never know if these companies are just someone working out of their basement or legitimate companies.

When I Google "Freight Shipping", I see uship, freightcenter, discount freight, & freight & shipping. Anyone have any feedback with these firms? Should I post another topic?
